Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul licenses 7 MW of mini hydro

The State Environmental Protection Agency (Fepam) in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil has issued implementation licenses with environmental impact assessments (EIA) for 6.95 MW of mini hydropower projects (CGHs).

Located in the municipality of Bom Jesus, the Touros II, III and V hydropower plants (HPPs) also received their environmental impact reports (RIMA).

With the licenses secured, the company in charge will be able to start construction works. In the next project stage, Fepam will commence its assessments for the issuance of operations license, which will give authorisation for the CGHs to be put online.

These HPPs are considered fundamental projects for energy supply in Rio Grande do Sul, the agency noted.

At present, CGHs represent 0.47% of the country's total installed capacity of 173,502 MW, power sector regulator Aneel announced last week.
