Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul gives enviro licence to 300-MW wind project

Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul State Environmental Protection Agency (Fepam) issued on Monday the preliminary licence for a 300-MW wind project.

The total cost of this project is estimated at BRL 1.5 billion (USD 389.5m/EUR 335.7m) and it is located on a 8,000-hectare (19,768 acre) area between the municipalities of Sao Gabriel and Lavras do Sul.

The wind farm envisages the installation of 100 turbines, enough to meet the demand of a city of 1.2 million inhabitants. Green Power Brazil will be responsible for implementing recovery actions of the Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs). It should also allocate 0.5% of the total costs for compensatory measures in protected areas.

Before the project can enter construction, the government has to issue an installation licence, the state government noted.
