Brazil's Ibama licenses 482-MW wind project

The Brazilian Institute of Environment, know as Ibama, has granted an installation licence for the 482-MW Coxilha Negra wind project, the government said on Monday.

Located in Santana do Livramento city, Rio Grande do Sul state, the project will occupy an area of 12,641 hectares (31,236 acres) on the Brazil-Uruguay border.

Consisting of 241 wind turbines of 2 MW each, the Coxilha Negra scheme will be able to produce enough power to meet the consumption of 2.8 million inhabitants. The wind farm will compete for a contract in the country's second reserve energy auction this year, scheduled for December 16, the government noted.

Before granting this licence, Ibama performed for one year a monthly monitoring of the fauna and flora in the area where the wind park will be built.

Currently, Ibama is also analysing the installation licence request for the adjacent 72.9-MW Central Geradora Eolica Fronteira Sul wind project.
