October 26 (SeeNews) - Brazil's Bahia state has the largest wind power potential in the world, the president of wind energy association ABEEolica, Elbia Gannoum, said on Friday, as cited by local newspaper Correio 24 horas.
Gannoum said so during the Water Forum in Minas Gerais, where specialists from Brazil, Portugal and the US discussed solutions to the water crisis the host country is currently facing.
At present, Bahia has 41 wind parks in operation and the outcome of recent energy auctions suggests that the state will have more than 80 new wind farms in the next years.
According to data released in August by the Power Trading Chamber (CCEE), Bahia nearly tripled its wind power production in the first half of the year, an increase of 297% over the same period last year.
In the upcoming February 5 energy auction, Bahia leads when it comes to registered wind projects, with 7,109 MW.
