Jul 29, 2013 - Brazilian energy sector regulator on Friday allowed Biosev (SAO:BSEV3), the local sugar and ethanol arm of French firm Louis Dreyfus, to test a 4-MW turbine at its Vale do Rosario sugar-cane bagasse fuelled thermoelectric power plant (TPP).
Aneel will clear the turbine's commercial operation after the completion of the test phase.
The plant will have two turbines of 4 MW each, another two turbines of 6 MW each, one 12-MW unit, one 15-MW unit, and two turbines with capacity of 25 MW, each.
Vale do Rosario is located in Morro Agudo municipality in southeastern Sao Paulo state. Biosev will operate it as an independent power producer (IPP).
Independent power producers are able to sell their surplus energy and distribute energy to large consumers, paying concessionaires for the use of transmission lines. The main difference between independent producers and concessionaires in Brazil is that the first operate at their own risk, mainly based on free competition, while the second are subject to specific public service rules, including participation in sharing obligations and advantages of the interconnected energy system.
