Oct 8, 2013 - Brazilian federal power utility Furnas plans to invest in production of wind turbines adapted to the local market needs, the company's new business director, Olga Simbalista, told local energy news site Canal Energia yesterday.
Although the project is not yet approved by the company's board, Simbalista considers that its development may start in 2013.
According to the executive, the production of wind turbines adapted to the country's conditions is of key importance for the better use of the equipment. The Brazilian wind power industry is now using equipment produced for completely different conditions from those in Brazil. The country's wind, especially in the Northeast, is linear and has the same direction all the time. The wind turbines used, however, were developed for European and US weather conditions, where turbines are installed in mountainous regions and wind comes from different directions, Simblista explained.
The executive added that the production of turbines adapted to the local conditions may boost even more the competitiveness of the Brazilian wind power sector.
