(SeeNews) - Nov 11, 2013 - Brazil has the word's third lowest cost for wind power generation, according to a recent survey by the World Energy Council (WEC) and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF).
According to the report World Energy Survey of Resources (WER 2013), the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) in Brazil stands at USD 55-99 (EUR 41-74) per MWh.
India and China are on the top of the ranking with LCOE of USD 47-113 per MWh and USD 49-93 per MWh, respectively.
The Brazilian wind power plants, however, have a higher capacity factor, of 23-45%, in comparison to India and China, where the factor is of 15-33% and 19-35%, respectively, the report outlined.
In South and Central America, the development of wind energy is focused in Brazil, where the government's energy auctions have encouraged the recent wind power boom, the survey showed. Also, the wind power projects in Brazil benefit from the accessible financing from the Brazilian National Social and Economic Development Bank (BNDES).
The report also highlights that in Brazil there is an availability of high quality wind resources, and the industry is using older turbines, which contributes to the lower production price.
(USD 1 = EUR 0.748)
