Sep 27, 2012 - Raizen, the biofuels joint venture of Brazilian sector player Cosan (SAO:CSAN3) and Anglo-Dutch oil major Shell (AMS:RDSA, LON:RDSA), now expects to crush some 56 million tonnes of sugar cane in 2012/2013 crop year, versus previously estimated up to 55 million tonnes.
The projection rise mirrors the recent upgrade of the estimate for Brazil's largest producing region Centre-South, Raizen's sugar and ethanol segment director, Pedro Mizutani, explained yesterday. Last week, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) revised upwards by 1.87% to 518.5 million tonnes the projected volume of sugar cane crushed by Centre-South's producers during the current crop year.
According to Mizutani, Raizen's ethanol output is seen at 1.9 billion litres (501.9m gallons), while sugar production is calculated to reach 4 million tonnes, both volumes within the targets announced by the company at the beginning of the crop year in April.
For the 2013/14 crop year, Mizutani sees a potential increase in the sugar cane crushing of Centre-South to between 560 million and 580 million tonnes, stressing Raizen's volumes will follow the same expansion rates.
