Brazil plans to replace 15 GW of thermal power with greener plants

Brazil intends to replace 15 GW of fossil fuel-based power facility with clean energy plants, mainly using renewable sources, by attracting green investments through new auctions.

The process will happen gradually as the country shuts down the more expensive thermal power plants based on polluting sources such as diesel and oil, the Minister of Mines and energy, Eduardo Braga, said on Thursday.

According to the minister, the modernisation of the Brazilian energy mix with the further addition of solar and wind power sources reinforced by distributed generation, will help reduce the cost of energy in the country, making it up to par with the international market.

Today, Brazil will conduct its eighth reserve energy auction. For it, state-owned energy firm Empresa de Pesquisa Energetica (EPE) has received 17,964 MW of wind and 20,953 MWp of solar projects, totalling 38,917 MW in proposed capacity.
