Brazil EPE registers 16 small hydropower, 16 biomass projects for Aug A-5 energy auction

Aug 22, 2013 - Brazilian state energy research firm EPE yesterday unveiled it had registered for participation 16 small hydropower and 16 biomass projects for the forthcoming A-5 energy auction, scheduled for August 29.

The small hydro plants have overall capacity of 919 MW, while biomass plants' capacity stands at 376 MW.

Also, EPE confirmed the participation of the 400-MW Sinop, which will be built on the Teles Pires River, in central-western Mato Grosso state. The facility will be the only HPP with capacity above 50 MW to participate in the auction. EPE highlighted that it had registered other 11 hydropower facilities, but they failed to obtain the needed preliminary licences in time. These plants may participate in the next A-5 auction, scheduled for December 13, EPE outlined. One of them is the 700-MW Sao Manoel HPP.

The bidding is aimed at meeting distributors' demand as of January 1, 2018. The hydro plants will sign 30-year contracts.
