(SeeNews) - Nov 6, 2013 - Brazilian electricity sector watchdog Aneel cleared local wind power developer Central Eolica Brite to operate as independent power producer (IPP) the 29.7-MW Santa Edwiges wind power plant.
The facility will have 11 turbines with a capacity of 2.7 MW each and it will be located in Caldeirao Grande do Piaui, in northern Piaui state. Under Aneel's regulation, the plant's construction has to begin by October 2, 2015, while the commercial operation should start by December 30, 2015.
In the same municipality, Aneel also allowed sector firm Central Eolica Colibri to operate the wind plant EOL Ventos de Santo Adriano as IPP; Central Eolica Caicara to operate EOL Ventos de Santo Albano; Central Eolica Bartolomeu to operate EOL Ventos de Santa Fatima; Central Eolica Aristarco to run EOL Ventos de Santa Barbara; Central Eolica Amontada to operate EOL Ventos de Santa Angelina; and Central Eolica Boreas to run EOL Ventos de Santa Regina.
Each of these six plants has 11 turbines with a total capacity of 29.7 MW. According to Aneel, the construction of the plants has to start by December 2014, while commercial operation is seen to begin by December 30, 2015.
Independent power producers are able to sell their surplus energy and distribute energy to large consumers, paying concessionaires for the use of transmission lines. The main difference between independent producers and concessionaires in Brazil is that the first operate at their own risk, mainly based on free competition.
