April 23 (Renewables Now) - US medical devices maker Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) this week unveiled a couple of deals with Clearway Energy Group LLC to buy solar power for its nation-wide operations.
The two parties have signed a 42-MW virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) under which Boston Scientific will buy about 120,000 MWh of renewable power a year. In addition to that, the medical technology company has subscribed to a portion of a 12.9-MW community solar power portfolio developed by Clearway in Massachusetts.
Boston Scientific noted that its agreement with Clearway will address the electricity load for the company's US activities, which equals 45% of its total carbon footprint. This is part of a plan to achieve global carbon neutral manufacturing and distribution by 2030.
"As a result of the agreement, Boston Scientific will offset emissions equivalent to removing more than 34,000 passenger vehicles from the road, or the amount of electricity needed to power more than 18,000 homes each year," said Brad Sorenson, senior vice president, Manufacturing and Supply Chain.
