May 5 (Renewables Now) - Robert Bosch GmbH is planning to enter the electrolysis components sector and invest up to EUR 500 million (USD 526.55m) in the development and mass production of stacks for electrolysers by 2030.

The group's Mobility Solutions business sector will work on the development of a stack for proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers.

In cooperation with a number of partners, Bosch is seeking to make a smart module that would combine an electrolyser stack, a control unit, power electronics and various sensors. The module will be connected to the Bosch cloud for better efficiency.

Pilot plants for the project should go into operation next year, with the delivery of the smart modules to manufacturers of electrolysis plants and industrial service providers planned to start in 2025.

Helped by its expertise in the automotive industry, the engineering giant will seek to begin mass production of the smart modules as quickly as possible at several of its sites in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and the Czech Republic.

The smart modules will be used in units with a capacity of up to 10 MW and in gigawatt-scale onshore and offshore plants.

As demand for green hydrogen is increasing rapidly, Bosch expects the global market for electrolyser components to grow to about EUR 14 billion by the end of the decade.

Commenting on the plan, chief executive Stefan Hartung said: “We cannot afford to delay climate action any longer, so we aim to use Bosch technology to support the rapid expansion of hydrogen production in Europe.”

The plan supports Bosch's strategy to invest some EUR 3 billion in climate-neutral technology, such as electrification and hydrogen, over the next three years.
