BNDES finances development of 7-MW onshore wind turbine by WEG

The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has approved BRL 59 million (USD 11.8m/EUR 10.8m) in financing for the development of a more efficient onshore wind turbine of 7 MW.

The funds are being allocated to local electrical equipment manufacturer WEG SA (BVMF:WEGE3), the bank announced on Thursday. It noted that a portion of the financing will be used to acquire components for a prototype for future field tests and certification.

The new model is expected to result in a reduction in the overall investment required for future onshore wind projects. Rated at 7 MW and with a rotor blade diameter of 172 metres, this turbine will be the largest on the local market once operational

WEG expects to start series production of the new equipment at the end of 2024. BNDES mentioned that the product could be exported to other countries.
