Engineering and consulting firm Black & Veatch today said it is supporting the development of a co-located onshore wind farm and hydrogen project in Ireland.
The project, located on the border of counties Mayo and Sligo, will see a 75-MW wind farm power an electrolyser producing green hydrogen. Its developer is Mercury Renewables.
Black & Veatch’s initial scope covered feasibility studies into hydrogen development. Its role has been to advise on the most suitable combination of electrolyser technology and size for the business goals for the project alongside hydrogen storage and transport options, as well as water supply alternatives. The firm said that once the optimal configuration is determined, it will develop an outline design for the facility, support engagement with the community and work to ensure the plant’s safe operation.
Mercury has been developing the Firlough wind farm since 2009. In 2021, it started public consultation on the proposed Firlough wind and green hydrogen development.
“The abundance of renewable energy potential in Ireland means green hydrogen should play a significant role in regional and national cross-sector decarbonisation," commented Tim Bills-Everett of Mercury.
