Recurrent Energy, a wholly-owned unit of Canadian Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ), has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for 45 MW of solar power with public transit network Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in California.
BART will be buying the electricity generated by Recurrent Energy’s 45-MW Gaskell West 2 solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in southern California. The facility is yet to be built and is expected to enter into service in 2020, Recurrent Energy said in a press statement.
The move makes BART the first US metro-rail entity to sign a utility-scale solar PPA this year, according to the announcement. This is BART's first-ever offtake contract for utility-scale solar power. It resulted from a renewable energy procurement process launched in May 2017 as part of BART’s Wholesale Electricity Portfolio Policy, which requires 100% of the organisation’s power to come from renewables by 2045.
