September 14 (Renewables Now) - German chemicals producer BASF SE (ETR:BAS) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with renewables developer X-Elio to procure 48 MW of solar energy for its manufacturing and research complex in Freeport, Texas.

The contracted power will come from the Liberty Solar Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Plant that X-Elio will build in Houston. The plant will have 72 MW of solar and 60 MW of energy storage capacity, BASF and X-Elio said in a joint statement.

The PPA will have a term of 12 years.

X-Elio expects to have the Liberty site in operation by 2024. The solar plant is expected to generate around 137 GWh of power per year.

For BASF, the latest PPA means that 100% of the Freeport site’s purchased power will be generated from renewable sources, according to the announcement.
