US renewables developer SunEdison will build a 200-MW solar power plant in Bangladesh with generation scheduled to start within the next 18 months.
The country's government has approved construction of the plant, which is one of several big projects in the pipeline, as part of its efforts to boost installed power capacity and the share of renewables, Reuters reported on Friday.
The 200-MW solar park will be built by SunEdison Energy Holding (Singapore) Pte Ltd in Teknaf sub-district. The tariff rate for the solar power has been set at BDT 13.26 (USD 0.17/EUR 0.16) per kWh, which is below the price of oil-generated electricity.
Bangladesh currently has 405 MW of renewables, representing 5.7% of its electricity generation, according to the article. There are solar home systems of 150 MW, rooftop systems of 11 MW and remainder is hydropower.
An official at the energy ministry was cited as saying that public-sector power companies had been asked to install solar capacity, while many foreign and local private-sector companies were filing preliminary proposals for solar projects ranging from 5 MW to 100 MW. The government is currently considering 14 of them.
