April 25 (Renewables Now) - Ball Corporation (NYSE:BLL) announced today that it will buy 388 MW of wind and solar power to address 100% of the electricity load utilised in its corporate, packaging and aerospace operations in North America by end-2021.

The US-based aluminium packaging provider said in a statement that it has signed two virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) tied to wind (161 MW) and solar (227 MW) developments in Oklahoma and Texas. The combined annual estimated energy production that was contracted amounts to 1,200,000 MWh.

The new VPPAs allow the company to cut its global Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, it said.

While the newly-signed contracts address only the company’s North American electricity use, chairman, president and CEO John Hayes stated that Ball is exploring similar opportunities across its global footprint.

"We also continue to work with our customers, suppliers and other industry partners to further enhance the can's sustainability credentials and meet increasing customer, consumer and retail demand for more sustainable solutions to the plastic pollution crisis," he added.
