Swiss renewable energy producer and trader Axpo Holding AG on Monday said it has acquired a battery and solar project in Sweden from project developer SENS (Sustainable Energy Solutions Sweden) in a deal of undisclosed commercial terms.
The project, located in Filipstad, some 300 km (186 miles) west of Stockholm, includes a 25-MW lithium-ion battery storage system, described as one of the largest in the country. Slated to start construction early next year, the battery will provide ancillary services to help balance the grid.
The same location hosts a ground-mounted solar project with a capacity of up to 20 MW. Axpo will co-develop the two projects with SENS.
The Swiss firm's head of batteries and hybrid systems, Frank Amend, remarked that battery storage systems and solar energy are becoming increasingly important in the power mix of the future.
Axpo has experience and ambitions in battery storage development. The company says that using its expertise in international energy trading, it effectively markets the batteries, maximising their utilisation in ancillary service and spot market trading.
