Austrian utility breaks ground on 120-MW solar project in Burgenland

Electric utility Burgenland Energie AG has begun the construction of Austria's largest solar park with a capacity of 120 MW in the east of the Alpine country.

The solar farm will be set up in Nickelsdorf, in the state of Burgenland, close to the border with Hungary, as a hybrid system in the immediate vicinity of a wind park.

The scheme will be built in several phases with the first one having a capacity of 120 MW. Together with project partner InWind, a total of 164 MW will be eventually in operation in the project area.

Thus, the facility will produce 164 GWh of clean power a year which would be enough to cover the annual consumption of 44,000 households.

The 120-MW section is expected to go online in December. The power will be supplied to the town of Nickelsdorf.

The project will support the state's climate targets and reduce its dependence on energy imports.

Burgenland, Austria's easternmost state, needs to boost its renewable energy production by 7 TWh in order to reach climate neutrality and energy self-sufficiency by 2030. About 4 TWh of the total will come from wind energy and 3.1 TWh from ground-mounted solar parks. The potential for rooftop installations and solar systems on carports and noise protection barriers is seen at 0.4 TWh.
