September 6 (Renewables Now) - Australian utility Origin Energy Ltd (ASX:ORG) announced on Wednesday it will set up an up to 5-MW virtual power plant in Victoria that will use solar power and battery facilities.

The government-funded virtual power plant will represent a cloud-based demand management platform that will manage stored electricity of more than 600 residential and commercial properties in the Aussie state. The power will be part of Origin's broader wholesale portfolio and will be dispatched into the national electricity market.

The project is being financed through the Victorian Government’s Microgrid Demonstration Initiative grant programme, under which the government will distribute AUD 10 million (USD 7.2m/EUR 6.2m) for eight microgrid schemes.

“By offering trial participants access to cheaper batteries and solar PV systems and connecting these to our demand management platforms, we will be able to help customers manage their stored and generated electricity, have this traded into the electricity market and reduce demand placed on the existing electricity network,” said Jon Briskin, executive general manager retail at Origin Energy.

The virtual power plant unites Origin Energy’s several initiatives related to distributed and decentralised energy. Local households will be given further information on how to enroll in the programme later this year, the utility said.
