Australian green hydrogen producer Infinite Green Energy will enter the North American market through a Canada-focused joint venture with compatriots Red Earth Energy and Frontier Impact Group.
The new entity, dubbed H2 Canada, will be focused on the production of hydrogen with electricity from renewable energy sources in Canada, Infinite Green said last week. The output will be supplied locally and exported to markets in Europe, Asia, the US and the Americas.
The trio intends to produce green hydrogen in volumes that will initially offset 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year. The project will involve partnerships with Indigenous First Nations communities to complete feasibility studies, starting in the last quarter of 2022.
While the exact sites being considered were not announced, Infinite Green said that several locations have been identified in Newfoundland, Quebec and British Columbia and all of them are “progressing at different stages.” The company noted that Canada was picked as a suitable destination for the initiative due to its abundant reserves of fresh water and potential for wind and hydropower generation.
Infinite Green was previously known as Infinite Blue Energy. The company changed its name earlier this year to better reflect its strategy to produce only renewable hydrogen.
