June 14 (Renewables Now) - Brazil-based renewables firm Atlantic Energias Renovaveis SA announced on Monday that it has started construction of a 195-MW wind complex in Piaui state.

Located in the city of Lagoa do Barro, the wind complex will require a total investment of about BRL 1.3 billion (USD 395m/EUR 351m). The Lagoa do Barro Wind Complex is comprised of 65 wind turbines, spread over an area of 2,854 hectares, the company said.

The wind complex, which should be up and running by 2018, is Atlantic's first in Piaui state. The firm is also currently building the 207-MW Santa Vitoria do Palmar Wind Complex in Rio Grande do Sul state.

Overall, Atlantic has 642 MW of wind power in its portfolio, of which 240 MW are in operation at the Morrinhos Wind Complex, and the Renascenca V and Eurus II wind plants.

Brazil's installed wind power capacity reached 11.03 GW in early May, according to the National Wind Energy Association (Abeeolica).
