December 5 (Renewables Now) - The La Rioja province in Argentina announced that it has secured 100 MW of capacity related to the Arauco wind complex in the second round of the RenovAr energy auction.
The particular wind project already had 195 MW awarded in two previous rounds, 100 MW and 95 MW, respectively. With this new addition, Arauco is on track to become one of the largest wind farms in Latin America, La Rioja governement said.
According to Juan Fernando Carbel, Parque Eolico Arauco's CEO, the wind plant can reach a potential capacity of 400 MW in the short term as the company's business model will keep focusing on securing power purchase agreements (PPA) with the Wholesale Electricity Market Administration Company (CAMMESA).
The firm also said that it is close to complete the financing for the wind projects as it is giving full priority to Arauco, the government noted.
