US technology giant Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) on Monday reaffirmed its pledge to run on 100% renewables worldwide by joining the RE100 campaign and unveiled the completion of a 50-MW solar farm in Arizona.
RE100 groups only businesses committed to 100% renewables. Apple announced its membership at Climate Week in New York City.
The iPhone maker already powers its operations in the US, China and 21 other countries using only renewable energy. Last year, it run 93% of its global activities on renewables, it said in a statement.
As per the Arizona solar park, Apple worked with utility Salt River Project to complete the plant. It will supply renewable power to Apple's global command data centre in Mesa.
Meanwhile, the company is pushing its manufacturing partners to commit to 100% renewables too. It said that antenna bands supplier Solvay Specialty Polymers and aluminum enclosure supplier Catcher Technology have pledged to reach 100% renewable power for their production of Apple goods by the end of 2018. Glass producer Lens Technology made a similar commitment last month.
Earlier this year, Apple set up an energy subsidiary as it planned to sell excess power on wholesale markets across the country. The plan was cleared by the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in August.
