Overview of the biggest asset owners in the North American Solar PV industry
To assess the state of the North American solar market and take stock of the movers and shakers in terms of solar asset ownership, Solarplaza has once again published its annual overview of the fifty largest solar PV portfolios in North America.
2021 may have been the second year under the “Covid-19 reality”, but still managed to become another year of record growth for the American solar industry. Final numbers have yet to be determined, but the current statistics point towards a total of 23 GW of new solar capacity added to the grid, which constitutes another major jump from 2020’s already record-breaking 16.5 GW of additions. Out of the total number, 19 GW of capacity is attributed to utility-scale solar, with the remaining 4 GW accounted for by distributed solar.
It’s clear that - despite the often-cited challenges of rising installation costs, worker shortages, supply-chain issues, and tariff complexity - the industry has thrived. Cumulatively, American solar capacity has crossed the 100 GW mark. By the end of Q3, the total number was already registered as high as 113.5 GW (SEIA, 2021). The portfolios listed in this overview account for a combined 61.2 GW of solar capacity, a major chunk of the total operational capacity. Solarplaza’s Top 50 overview of North American solar portfolios highlights the major solar asset owners in the U.S. and Canada and shares insights into portfolio sizes, changes in the landscape, and core details on the listed organizations. As usual, the overview serves as a key preparation resource for the ‘Solarplaza Summit Asset Management North America’, hosted on 6 and 7 April in Oakland, California. Returning for its 8th edition, this event will once again be the key meeting place for the North American solar market, allowing you to reconnect with your industry peers and gain the latest insights into the major trends and development in the financial and technical solar asset management field. Many of the companies listed in the overview will be represented at the event, both in the audience and on stage, sharing their expertise and leading views.
