Ameresco to build 10-MW solar-storage micro-grid in Prince Edward Island

US energy efficiency and renewables firm Ameresco Inc (NYSE:AMRC) has been awarded a contract to install a solar-plus-storage micro-grid for a community in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, it announced recently.

The so-called Slemon Park micro-grid will consist of a 10-MW solar farm with direct current-coupled energy storage, Ameresco said. The project was developed in collaboration with local electric utility company Prince Edward Island (PEI) Corporation.

The micro-grid will benefit Slemon Park, a business and residential community owned and operated by commercial real estate company Slemon Park Corporation.

The Canadian government put CAD 12.3 million (USD 9.65m/EUR 8.66m) into the project through its Investing in Canada infrastructure plan. The Prince Edward Island government contributed CAD 12.7 million, Slemon Park Corporation announced back in August 2020.

Improving grid resiliency will enable the province of Prince Edward Island to successfully implement renewable energy projects that will help serve to protect the Island’s environment and lead to a more sustainable and economically robust future,” said Bob McCullough, the president of Ameresco Canada.

Construction works started in December 2021. The partners expect to energise the facility in autumn 2022.
