Dubai-based renewables company AMEA Power LLC has struck a 25-year off-take contract with energy trader GreenCo Power Services (Pty) Ltd for the output of an 85-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) park in South Africa.
The newly-signed power purchase agreement (PPA) concerns a project that is under development in the North West Province in South Africa and is seen to reach financial close next quarter, AMEA Power said on Tuesday.
The construction of the solar plant is expected to be financed by Standard Bank of South Africa. The three parties will work together to develop a fast-track model to stimulate the onboarding of renewables in South Africa, the announcement says.
“As part of AMEA Power’s goal to deliver clean energy across Africa, the Company is on track to deliver several large renewable energy projects in South Africa over the coming few years,” said Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of AMEA Power.
For the purposes of further growing its footprint in the country, the UAE company has also opened a new regional hub in Johannesburg.
In mid-December, a consortium led by AMEA Power won a 120-MW solar project in the sixth bid submission phase of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) programme. The company also says it has sites for the development of a further 1GW of renewables in the country
