Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has committed to buying 641 MW of electricity from solar parks that Spain’s Acciona SA (BME:ANA) will build in the US.
The parties have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), which supports the e-commerce giant’s company-wide goal to use 100% renewable energy by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040. The off-take deal was announced by Acciona on Thursday and comes straight after Amazon’s PPA with Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) for power from 250 MW of capacity at the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

In the US, Acciona will build for Amazon four solar parks totalling 889 MWp in the states of Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio. The projects will take around four years to implement and will represent a combined investment of close to USD 1 billion (EUR 824.8m). The capacity will be added in line with the Spanish firm’s goal to install 5 GW of new renewables plants globally between 2020 and 2024.
Details about the start and volume of supply to Amazon were not provided.
Separately, Acciona said it will collaborate with Amazon Web Services (AWS), making the Amazon subsidiary its “preferred cloud provider.”
