Canadian energy firm Greengate Power Corporation said on Tuesday it has received provincial approval to build what it says will be the country’s largest solar photovoltaic (PV) park -- a 400-MW complex in Alberta.
The permit by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) allows privately-owned Greengate to build and operate the so-called Travers solar farm in the province’s Vulcan County. Estimated at around CAD 500 million (USD 376m/EUR 339m), the complex is planned to become fully operational in 2021 and generate enough electricity to meet the demand of over 100,000 homes. Its lifespan will be more than 35 years, the developer says.
In its decision, the AUC has stated that, following an extensive review, the project is in the public interest, considering its social, economic and environmental effects. Greengate expects to launch construction next year.
Based in Calgary, Greengate has developed almost 600 MW of operating or near-operating wind projects in Alberta and Ontario, representing an investment of over CAD 1 billion. The company’s goal is to develop nearly 1 GW of fresh wind and solar schemes in line with its expansion in the renewables sector.
