Nov 1, 2012 - The centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg said on Tuesday it had inaugurated a 250 kW power-to-gas research facility.
The new power-to-gas plant will be converting green energy into hydrogen and methane and has potential methane production of up to 300 cubic metres per day.
According to the estimations of ZDW, this is so far the biggest power-to-gas plant of its kind in the world.
While operating the plant, ZDW and its partners aim to further optimise the technology used in the facility in a bid to upgrade the plant's capacity to between 1 MW and 20 MW at an increased efficiency. ZDW will be partnering with Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES and German company SolarFuel.
The power-to-gas technology offers storage capacity thanks to the existing gas infrastructure.
