Aussie renewable energy developer Windlab Pty Ltd, owned by Squadron Energy and Federation Asset Management, said today it has sealed an indigenous land use agreement with the traditional owners of a region in North Queensland that will host a 600-MW wind farm project.
The agreement with the Gugu Badhun Aboriginal nation concerns Windlab’s Upper Burdekin wind farm, set to be built on pastoral land in the state’s Badhun county. The proposal envisages the installation of about 100 turbines to produce electricity for up to 300,000 Australian homes.
The developer explained that the agreement will enable it to incorporate initiatives related to environmental protection, employment and education for the region’s Traditional Owners and give Gugu Badhun a lead role in conservation initiatives. It sets the stage for specific surveys, monitoring and mitigation measures aimed at protecting the cultural heritage.
The pact will also see the Gugu Badhun give the wind farm a new name in their traditional language.
The project website shows that the scheme is in the development stages and states that construction may commence about two years after all regulatory approvals are in place.
