November 20 (Renewables Now) - Finnish company Moventas Gears Oy said on Thursday it is working on expanding its factory in Texas, preparing to fix and test main gearboxes of up to 3 MW there.

The project is part of the company’s plan to improve its service offering in North America, Moventas explained. Following the expansion, the Big Spring plant in Texas’ Howard County will consist of a 7,500-sq ft (679 sq m) workshop and a 35,000-sq ft area with a warehouse and a test bench facility.

The Finnish company will integrate its entire workshop repair activities in the US into the Big Spring factory, except for the Canadian workshop repairs that will continue to be carried out in Ontario. By doing so, Moventas will be able to more efficiently serve its clients in North America and become the company with the biggest installed base at a single location in the US, thus paving its way towards expansion over the coming years.

“The consolidation of US workshop repair activities is at the core of Moventas’ revised strategy for North America,” said Martin Zingg, senior vice president of global service.
