A decibel meter is a tool that measures sound pressure. The standardized measurement is on the decibel scale and can also go by the name of a sound pressure level (SPL) meter. Sound level meter and noise meter are also used somewhat, though not nearly as often. There is a microphone built-in that captures sound. The mic captures deviations in sound pressure and then converts them into an electrical signal.
