Walgreens harnesses geothermal energy for store heating

(ADPnews) - Dec 29, 2010 - US drugstore chain Walgreens (NYSE:WAG) has opened a new Oak Park-located store, which is using geothermal power for heating and cooling.

The company said yesterday that the geothermal system will cut the store's energy usage by about 46%.

Set by geothermal systems developer Indie Energy, the installation harnesses the earth's heat utilising a network of four closed-loop boreholes installed to depths of 650 feet (198 metres), and a heat exchange system with the building that is controlled by Indie's EnergyLoop technology. The latter monitors and optimises this exchange in real-time to provide the maximum energy efficiency.
