Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) today announced two contracts of 53 MW each.
The company has secured a 53-MW engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deal in Germany. It has also received a firm 53-MW order from US utility Xcel Energy Inc (NYSE:XEL) for a proposed 600-MW wind project.
The German order comes from a consortium of Holcim Deutschland GmbH and mdp GmbH, and includes a 20-year service agreement. It will see Vestas supply and commissioning 16 V112-3.3 MW turbines for the Rethwisch wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein. Delivery is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2016.
The turbine manufacturer said this was its first large-scale EPC project in Germany.
"We chose Vestas’ EPC offering because it enables us to focus our time and resources on our core competency – project development – and thereby increase our efficiency. This will be increasingly important going forward to compete in the new auction system," commented Hans Helmut Kutzeer, mdp managing director.
At the same time, Xcel Energy has placed a firm order for 53 MW of V110-2.0 MW turbine components as a production tax credit (PTC) Safe Harbor order for its 600-MW Rush Creek project. Vestas will produce the turbine nacelles, blades and towers at its Colorado factories. They will be delivered to the customer in December.
Vestas in April signed a conditional deal to supply up to 300 pieces of V110-2.0 MW turbines for the 600-MW project. Xcel Energy is awaiting approval by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
