Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has been selected to potentially supply the turbines for the 600-MW Wando Geumil offshore wind project in South Korea.
The Danish wind turbine maker said today it has signed a preferred supplier agreement with power generator Korea South-East Power Company (KOEN) for the project located offshore Wando-Gun, South Jeolla Province.
Provided the project goes ahead, Vestas will supply and install 40 units of its V236-15.0 MW turbine and will also operate and maintain the wind farm over 20 years. Turbine deliveries are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the wind park planned to come online in the third quarter of 2026.
This will be Vestas’ first collaboration with KOEN, said Vestas Korea and Asia Pacific executive Srdan Cenic. “Through the project, KOEN and Vestas will work together to unleash the potential of offshore wind in the west coast of the country and contribute to South Korea’s goal of generating 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030,” commented Srdan Cenic.
Yesterday, Vestas announced it has been chosen as the preferred turbine supplier for the up to 1.6-GW Nordseecluster wind project cluster in German waters.
