Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has secured a contract to replace existing Clipper turbines with its own V110-2.2 MW machines at three wind parks in Texas.
The power plants to be repowered are the 225-MW Trinity Hills, 145-MW Sherbino Mesa II, and 60-MW Silver Star wind parks, which were recently sold by the wind arm of UK oil major BP plc (LON:BP) to funds managed by affiliates of Ares Management Corp (NYSE:ARES). The latter said last week it would replace the existing wind turbine generators with new equipment and that commercial operations at the repowered assets were expected to begin in 2020.
The contract for Vestas, awarded by Phoenix Wind Repower LLC, marks the Danish wind turbine maker’s largest repowering job to date, it announced Thursday. The capacity stands at 383 MW, including previously purchased Vestas PTC components and the order for 359 MW.
Vestas said turbine delivery is to commence in the fourth quarter of 2019. The company will be in charge of the supply, installation and commissioning, while its contracts also include 10-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreements for each facility.
Phoenix Wind Repower is a portfolio investment of a fund managed by Ares’s Infrastructure and Power strategy.
