Dec 12, 2014 - Danish company Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) on Thursday unveiled a firm and unconditional order to supply turbines for the 310-MW Lake Turkana wind farm in Kenya.
The order, placed by developer Lake Turkana Wind Power Ltd, calls for the delivery, installation and commissioning of 365 units of Vestas’ V52-850 kW turbines and also includes a 15-year Active Output Management (AOM 4000) service agreement. Financial details were not provided.
The Danish wind turbine maker noted that this is the largest order it has received in terms of the number of turbines in a single project.
The Lake Turkana farm, valued at EUR 623 million (USD 772m), will be situated near the shore of Lake Turkana and will be the largest facility of its kind in Africa, once completed. Construction works will start early next year, while commercial operations are scheduled to commence by 2017. The complex is estimated to produce 1,400 GWh of electricity annually, accounting for 15% of Kenya’s total current power production. Its output is expected to save Kenya about EUR 150 million in fuel imports every year.
