Dec 27, 2013 - Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) this week said it had secured two contracts to supply total of 260 MW of turbines for US wind projects.
The bigger order is for 150 MW or 75 units of the V110-2.0 MW machine and comes from US firm First Wind Holdings LLC. The equipment will be installed at the Route 66 wind farm near Amarillo, Texas. The deal, announced on December 23, is part of a master supply agreement under which Vestas could supply 568 MW more turbines for other First Wind projects.
The Danish company said it would produce the blades, nacelles and towers for the Route 66 project at its Colorado factories. Delivery is to take place early in 2015, while the turbines will be commissioned in the middle of the same year. All orders under the master supply agreement with First Wind will include 10-year service agreements using Active Output Management (AOM) 5000 and the VestasOnline surveillance system.
In a separate press release on Tuesday, Vestas unveiled an order for 110 MW or 55 pieces of the V100-2.0 MW wind turbines for another US project the name of which was not disclosed. The company did not say anything about the customer either, but noted that the machines would be delivered in the second half of 2014. Commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2015.
So far this year Vestas has won orders for more than 1,700 MW of turbines in Canada and the US. It is currently recruiting more workers for the blade plant in Windsor and the blade and nacelle factories in Brighton, Colorado, as it seek to meet increased demand. The company said it expected to add hundreds of production workers in the first half of next year.
