Austrian energy company Verbund AG (VIE:VER) has put into operation a 10-MW battery storage facility in the city of Eisenach, Germany, to support the integration of renewable energy and the stability of the power network in the region.
The system, which went online at the beginning of April, consists of three battery stations and provides grid-related services to secure the local distribution network in Thuringia and integrate renewable energy. The stored energy is used as a means of optimising revenue in the flexibility market, Verbund said on Tuesday.
The project was developed and implemented by German-Norwegian Eco Stor GmbH on behalf of the Austrian power company.
The facility in Eisenach is the second battery storage project realised by Verbund in Germany. At the beginning of this year, the Austrian power producer commissioned its first 10-MW storage system in Breitenworbis, Thuringia. The two facilities in Eisenach and Breitenworbis help ensure the stabilisation of the distribution grid of TEN Thueringer Energienetze GmbH & Co. KG -- the largest distribution network operator in the state.
Verbund noted that two more battery storage projects are currently under construction in Bavaria and will be brought into operation by the end of this year.
