Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall AB today inaugurated the 407-MW Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm, located off Denmark’s west coast in the North Sea and deemed the largest such facility in Scandinavia.
The ceremony was attended by Crown Prince Frederik, the country’s prime minister Mette Frederiksen and the minister of climate, energy and utilities Dan Jorgensen.
Vattenfall said in a statement that this wind park will increase the country’s wind power production by about 12%. The company won the right to build the facility in 2015 with a record low bid.
The plant itself can cover the annual consumption of around 425,000 local homes. It consists of 49 units of MHI Vestas’ 8.3-MW turbines, which were shipped from the Port of Esbjerg, but as from 2024 will be serviced from a new service hub at the Port of Hvide Sande.
Vattenfall is also building the Vesterhav Syd & Nord wind farms (350 MW) and Kriegers Flak (605 MW) off Denmark.
