October 3 (Renewables Now) - Dutch marine contractor Van Oord said on Tuesday it has completed the acquisition of MPI Offshore from Vroon Group, strengthening its positions on the global wind market, especially in the UK.

Van Oord signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to acquire the offshore wind installation contractor for an undisclosed sum in July. The deal includes MPI Offshore's base in Stokesley, UK, the vessels MPI Adventure and MPI Resolution, associated crew, and project contracts related to the vessels, namely for the offshore wind farms London Array, Prinses Amaliawindpark and Rampion. The acquisition will add 100 people, both office staff and crew, to Van Oord's UK business.

"The acquisition of MPI Offshore helps us to strengthen our position in the UK wind market, the largest offshore wind market in the world," said chief executive Pieter van Oord.

The company said the purchase is in line with its ambitions and investment programme for the coming years and follows the acquisitions in recent years of Bilfinger's offshore wind activities and Ballast Nedam offshore operations.
