September 10 (Renewables Now) - US wind resource assessment specialist NRG Systems today announced its purchase of Lidar technology developed by Pentalum of Israel as it said it recognises Lidar's growing importance in resource measurement and wind farm operations.

According to the announcement, Pentalum's patented Direct Detect Lidar technology provides the high precision and reliability of Lidar at a significantly lower cost than conventional Doppler Lidar technologies. The technology is currently in use on five continents as part of Pentalum's SpiDAR Vertical Wind Profiler, which began deployments in 2012.

"Our customers have been asking us for a full service, integrated wind measurement solution that includes the latest tower based and remote sensing capabilities and we now have that for them," said NRG Systems' president Justin Wheating.

NRG Systems, which was last year taken over by ESCO Technologies Inc (NYSE:ESE), plans to start shipping new SpiDAR units early next year and to start offering service to existing SpiDAR customers in the coming weeks. At the same time, it will continue to sell and support Leosphere's Windcube Lidar in North America.
