Dec 2, 2014 - The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on Monday issued an environmental assessment (EA) for a 12-MW demonstration wind project off the Virginia coast.
The scheme calls for the installation and operation of two 6-MW wind turbines offshore Virginia Beach and cables to shore. It was proposed by Dominion Virginia Power, a unit of US energy producer Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE:D), and the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME). The selected site is located next to Dominion’s 2-GW commercial lease area won in September 2013.
In a press release, the Department of Interior’s (DOI’s) BOEM said it will take into account public comments on the EA before deciding whether to issue a Finding of No Significant Impact on the project or undertake further analyses under the National Environmental Policy Act. The agency will accept comments for 30 days.
Turbine installation work on the two-turbine offshore wind farm is expected to be completed by 2017. The goal of the scheme is to demonstrate ways to install, operate and maintain turbines situated far from the shore. If this project proves successful, a larger commercial wind farm will be constructed.
