September 29 (Renewables Now) - The US Grains Council (USGC), an export-oriented trade body, is looking to develop opportunities for US ethanol exports in Africa, which it says represents a significant potential source of demand.
Efforts include promoting the development of ethanol supportive policies across the region, the organisation said on Thursday. Its manager of ethanol export market development, Brian Healy, recently visited Kenya and attended an ethanol and sugar conference there in a bid to extend the US industry's spread to new markets.
A study commissioned by USGC shows that US ethanol is already reaching markets in Africa through the Persian Gulf, which has greater refining capacity. According to it, US ethanol exported to the UAE is being blended into gasoline and then sold in countries in East Africa.
