The US Department of Energy (DoE) will host an event on September 28 to gather public input on the scope of an Environmental Assessment (EA) for Project Icebreaker, the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo) said this week.
LEEDCo is the developer of the demonstration project which proposes the installation of six wind turbines, totalling 20.7 MW, offshore in Lake Erie.
The public scoping event will also involve representatives from the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the US Coast Guard (USCG), as well as LEEDCo officials. It will take place at the Lakewood Park in Lakewood, Ohio.
"This is another step along the way to ensure Project Icebreaker becomes e a reality for the Cleveland area," commented LEEDCo president Lorry Wagner. DoE is proposing to authorise federal funding to LEEDCo to design, permit, construct and decommission the project.
In May, it was announced that LEEDCo's project and an offshore wind pilot project by a University of Maine-led consortium will get USD 80 million (EUR 71.5m) of DoE grants lost by two other offshore wind projects.
