US DoE offers USD 300m in grants to improve transmission permitting

The US Department of Energy (DoE) on Tuesday announced the availability of up to USD 300 million (EUR 278m) in grant funding to accelerate the siting and permitting processes for electric transmission across the country.

“To meet our ambitious clean energy goals, we need to expand the nation’s transmission capacity by 60% over the next seven years,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm.

The grant scheme will support state, tribal and local entities that are responsible for issuing permits for electric transmission projects.

The Transmission Siting and Economic Development (TSED) grant programme will also support economic development projects in communities impacted by new transmission development.

The USD 300 million in funding is the first tranche of a programme worth a total of USD 760 million, established by the Inflation Reduction Act. The initiative is part of broader efforts by the US government to improve transmission buildout.

Concept papers are due by October 31, 2023, and full applications by April 5, 2024.
