French energy major TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) and Irish floating offshore wind company Simply Blue Group have created a joint venture (JV) targeting floating offshore wind opportunities in the US.
The JV, called TotalEnergies SBE US, will bring together TotalEnergies’ expertise in large offshore projects, Simply Blue’s floating knowledge, and a team of US offshore wind specialists, the parties said on Wednesday.
“The future and next frontier of U.S. offshore wind is floating,” said Simply Blue chief executive Sam Roch-Perks, adding that almost two-thirds of US offshore wind resources are in deeper waters that will need floating wind platforms.
Stephane Michel, president, Gas, Renewables & Power at TotalEnergies, said the JV will help the energy group achieve its goal of installing 100 GW of global renewable power generation by 2030, part of which will be floating offshore wind.
TotalEnergies currently has more than 6 GW of offshore wind in development. Of this, more than 40% is floating offshore wind including over 2 GW of projects in South Korea.
Simply Blue has more than 3.2 GW of offshore wind in development offshore Ireland and the UK. It is developing the Emerald Floating Wind project in the Celtic Sea off the Irish coast with Shell and the Blue Gem Wind floating wind projects in the Welsh waters of the Celtic Sea with TotalEnergies.
